Peihang Benoit
September 29th, 2025

We are delighted to announce that our next studio visit will take place at the studio of French-Taiwanese artist Peihang Benoit, located in the historic Montparnasse area on the Left Bank of Paris on September 29th, 2025 .
Her recent work, shaped by the journey into motherhood and the experience of migration, begins with the silhouettes of bodies and objects in everyday surroundings, drawing on them to create narratives that shift from the tangible toward the metaphysical. Through painting, she perceives the world, its mutable identities, desires, and modes of fulfilment through the maternal lens, where ordinary gestures become thresholds of discovery and transformation. Her practice resists prescribed expectations, interrogating memory, intimacy, human connection, and the elemental forces that give shape to existence. Loosely echoing compositions and textures from art historical works that embody ecstatic encounter, each mark invites a moment of transcendence beyond daily minutiae. The process reveals the paradoxical pull between care, yearning, and release, unsettling conventional accounts often tied to maternity. The sensation is not simply erotic; it reflects a deep contentment, closer to a spiritual state.
Peihang approaches painting as an assembly of recollections, lived traces, and heightened spirit, countering the ephemerality of contemporary media. The outlines in her canvases reveal passageways to distant landscapes, evoking places she has traversed or imagined, pushing against the boundaries of material territory. These inner terrains, carried within the figure, become bridges between intimacy and infinity, transforming familiar interiors into thresholds to other realms. Their fluid contours capture shifting memories, where belonging and geography dissolve, inviting the viewer to move beyond the visible into domains of transcendence and possibility.
During this visit, we will have the opportunity to see her works in progress for an upcoming museum group exhibition in southern Taiwan, alongside her ongoing explorations in ceramics and other developments.
Peihang Benoit explores the intersections of time, space, memory, body, and identity, with a recent focus on filiation and generational history. Primarily a painter, she also engages with ceramics, photography, and other project-based media, drawing from her multicultural background and personal experiences, including motherhood. Her keen observations of life’s stages enable her to shape visual narratives that intertwine individual and collective experiences. Benoit’s work reflects how personal stories are shaped by broader socio-political forces, offering a nuanced exploration of identity and memory.
Born in Taipei in 1984, Benoit’s upbringing was influenced by her parents' academic careers, which eventually led her to live in the U.S., Taipei, London, and Paris. These experiences expanded her perspective on the human condition and deepened her engagement with themes of identity and displacement. Inspired by her activist mother, she often incorporates women’s viewpoints into her work, revealing the intricate connections between contemporary life and enduring questions of identity.
Benoit holds a BA and MFA in Fine Art from National Taiwan Normal University, along with an MA from Chelsea College of Arts in London. She has received numerous accolades, including the ChiMei Award of Chimei Museum, the Chu Teh-Chun Award, the Ashurst Emerging Artist Prize (UK), and a finalist of Hopper Prize (US). Her work has been exhibited in places such as the Saatchi Gallery, Macau Art Museum, Tokyo University of the Arts, National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, and Pier 2 Art Center, with gallery solo exhibitions at Aki Gallery, YiriArts, and TKG+Projects. Her works are held in the permanent collection of the Chimei Museum and were recently acquired by Dib Bangkok International Contemporary Art Museum.
Benoit currently lives and works in Paris.
